Sony's decision to launch Helldivers 2 on PlayStation 5 and PC simultaneously paid off bigtime. It boasts of six-figure player counts on Steam months after its release and is one of the best-selling games on the platform. Arrowhead's latest announcement, however, may cause it to lose some of the goodwill it garnered over the months.
New PC players will now need to link their copy of Helldivers 2 with a PlayStation Network ID, without which the game won't be playable. Existing Helldivers have until June 4 before a PlayStation account becomes mandatory. Until now, linking your PSN ID was optional because of "technical issues at launch".
This has obviously caused some friction among the community, who (rightfully) argue that they shouldn't be forced to create a new ID to play a game they purchased. It would have gone down easier if it included cross-progression, but that doesn't seem to be the case. That said, Arrowhead promised cross progression would come at some point, but it may be a while before that happens.
