PlayStation Network suffers massive outage, with down servers blocking games from launching

The PlayStation Network has experienced multiple outages since launching in 2006. While not yet as severe as some past incidents, the service vital to multiplayer PS5 games has been down for around 2 hours. On the official PSN status page, Sony confirms that gaming and social features remain offline.
Down Detector shows that the issue began shortly after 9PM CET on March 21st. Activity on the website peaked at 9:52PM, with nearly 14,000 reports of problems. Sure enough, on Reddit, posters explain how they have had to reshuffle their weekend plans.
Initially, the PlayStation Network status page indicated that all services were down, including PSN account management, the PS Store, and video playback. Since then, Sony has specified that “launching games, apps, or network features” is affected. It explains that it’s trying to “resolve the issue as soon as possible.”
It appears that the inconvenience is global, with multiple regions impacted. However, some users who had been playing the same PS4 or PS5 game for several hours have avoided disconnects. Otherwise, gamers have to resort to titles that don’t depend on internet connectivity, like the brand new Crimson Desert.
When might PSN be back up for all gamers?
How long the PlayStation Network outage will continue is anyone’s guess. The last comparable calamity occurred in February 2025, when PSN was unavailable for up to 24 hours. Eventually, Sony apologized to players and offered extra subscription time at no cost. Despite blocking millions of users from single and multiplayer games, the company never explained the cause of the problems.
Hopefully, fans won’t see a repeat of 2011, the worst outage in PSN history. After a cyberattack, Sony kept it offline for over 3 weeks to clean up after the data breach.
