Discord had recently been linked to the possibilty of a merger with Microsoft; however, its founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy have decided to go a different way since then. Their company has just completed a round of funding that has resulted in the acquisition of Sony Interactive Entertainment as a minority owner.
This move might well be expected to bring the popular service and the PlayStation ecosystem into closer alignment, and according to a new blog post by Jim Ryan, that is pretty much what is going to happen. The executive has revealed that PlayStation Network (PSN) users will be able to connect Discord "with the social and gaming experience" on that platform in a new way soon.
Sony has yet to reveal what this new feature will be exactly and how it will work; however, it estimates that more details will be forthcoming "in the coming months". In the meantime, Ryan notes that the PlayStation team is "beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services", and that he is personally "inspired by their lifelong love for gaming and our teams’ shared passion to help bring friends and communities together in new ways".
