Sony has revealed that it has sold an incredible 7.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles since its launch. The figure represents sales until the end of March which totals around 1.56 million sales per month on average since it was launched in November last year.
Sony has sold a staggering 7.8 million next-gen PS5 consoles the company has revealed in its latest earnings call. The huge number of sales is reflective of just how in demand and difficult to find it has been since it went on sale in November. When averaged across the five month period, the PS5 has been selling around 1.56 million units a month, or around 50,000 sales a day.
The PlayStation business is Sony’s most profitable, and the PS5 represents another hit for the company. According to Sony, the fourth-quarter operating profit totalled US$3.14 billion, which is a record for the company. It was only earlier this month that NPD reported that the PS5 has had the fastest new gaming platform launch ever in the US.
Shortages of the Sony PS5, of course, continue to be an issue and comes amid a general shortage of silicon caused by a spike in world-wide demand following the pandemic. Not only were more consumer electronics purchased for working from home purposes, but gaming sales also took off as people looked to entertain themselves from home. There’s always the PS4, if you can’t get a PS5, which still sold 1 million units in the last three months of 2020.

I have been writing about consumer technology over the past ten years, previously with the former MacNN and Electronista, and now Notebookcheck since 2017. My first computer was an Apple ][c and this sparked a passion for Apple, but also technology in general. In the past decade, I’ve become increasingly platform agnostic and love to get my hands on and explore as much technology as I can get my hand on. Whether it is Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, Nintendo, Xbox, or PlayStation, each has plenty to offer and has given me great joy exploring them all. I was drawn to writing about tech because I love learning about the latest devices and also sharing whatever insights my experience can bring to the site and its readership.
