Discord Nitro users start canceling subscriptions en masse as CEO teases Ethereum and NFT integration
The Discord feedback forum is filling up with messages from Nitro subscribers who have canceled their subscriptions based on a recent Twitter post by Jason Citron. Many of the subject lines in the forum are simply either “no crypto” or “no NFT”. Citron’s tweet was created in response to a post made by Not Boring’s Packy McCormick, who had written about Discord and its Web 3.0 potential.
Citron headed his post with the teaser “probably nothing” above a screenshot of the familiar user settings for Discord. Under the menu “connections” there is an option for connecting with Ethereum, with both MetaMask and WalletConnect seemingly offered as choices for further integration with crypto. Both of those wallets can also be used in connection with non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that are hosted on Ethereum’s blockchain.
Many responses to the tweet and posts on the Discord community forum have been against the idea of Discord/crypto integration, with some concerned about the energy use cost inherent to transactions (Discord has over 150 million monthly active users) while others are worried about the pyramid/Ponzi scheme perception that has attached itself to NFT digital token trading.
It appears the Discord + Ethereum connection is likely to go ahead though, with Citron already stating that the screenshot was a pre-release picture. It’s possible he is gauging the reaction to such a feature, which if he is, then he will see how divided Discord users, and especially Nitro subscribers, are in regard to the messenger’s potential expansion into the crypto world.
