Discord now banned in Turkey following court order
Yesterday, Russia banned Discord for failing to delete roughly 1,000 allegedly illegal items. Previously, the instant messaging platform had been fined for the same rather shady reason (there are no details about the nature of these so-called "illegal items" mentioned by the authorities). Today, Turkey has decided to do the same, but this time the reason is clear, involving suspicions of child sexual abuse.
Earlier this month, a 19-year-old man murdered two women, and, while the public was openly outraged by this sad event, many Discord users were praising it. Due to the nature of the platform, monitoring it and stopping illegal activity, or at least being able to identify those involved in it, is extremely difficult, said Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu. He justified the decision by highlighting that
"Since Discord refuses to share its own information, including IP addresses and content, with our security units, we were forced to block access."
The ban decision was published earlier today by the Turkish Information Technologies and Communication Authority. Discord has not issued any statement regarding this matter yet. Although it was published more than four years ago, Discord for Dummies could be a book worth reading for many of those who aren't mastering this platform yet. It currently goes for $15 in Kindle format, and the paperback version is discounted by 33%, so it can be acquired for $16.71 instead of $24.99.
