TikTok offices in Canada ordered to close due to national security risks
Last year, the Canadian government started to review the expansion plan of ByteDance Ltd., the company behind TikTok, which was planning to open a local branch under the "TikTok Technology Canada Inc." banner. Sadly, that plan came to a halt as the government decided to remove TikTok's business presence in the country, although this also means vaporizing hundreds of local jobs. On the bright side, Canadians can still access the website and use the mobile apps, at least for the time being.
According to a statement by Canadian Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne,
"The decision was based on the information and evidence collected over the course of the review and on the advice of Canada's security and intelligence community and other government partners."
Obviously, this doesn't stop TikTok from taking this decision to court in the hope of a favorable decision.
While civilians can use TikTok unhindered, the app has already been banned from government-issued devices. The officials labeled it as having "an unacceptable level of risk to privacy and security" to justify that decision.
In the US, the Chinese social media giant is currently fighting Biden's law that gave ByteDance a deadline (January 19th) to sell TikTok or face a ban. According to US officials, Chinese-based ownership of the company is a threat to national security.
