As reported by NBC News, The US Supreme Court will now hear TikTok's plea to delay its ban in the US. The Chinese social media platform owned by ByteDance will be banned in the US once a new law by the Biden administration goes into effect on January 19, 2025.
The new law, Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, classifies TikTok as a National Security threat, requiring ByteDance to sell the platform to a new owner in the US or face a complete ban in the country.
The company's appeal against the ban was rejected by a federal appeals court in the US earlier this month. The court ruled that concerns the Chinese government could steal user data and potentially manipulate content were legitimate.
It then filed an emergency injunction seeking a delay until the Trump administration could take office and the Supreme Court could hear its plea. The Supreme Court has agreed to listen to the case but said it will not block or delay the law from coming into effect.
