Sony has just added new variants of its Mobile Elevated Standard (ES) audio equipment for cars. They consist of 4 kinds of speaker and 1 subwoofer equipped with the latest generation of the OEM's MRC-reinforced diaphragms, combined with Separated Notch Edge Surround technology for increased clarity and an "audiophile-grade crossover" in certain units. They are available to pre-order from now.

Sony has already unveiled its latest AV receivers: now, there are new Mobile ES-series speakers to install in your car alongside one of them. The OEM asserts that they leverage "various technical updates" for the ideal reproduction of high-quality audio, even downloads, to enjoy while driving.

The 2021 Mobile ES line consists of the XS-162ES 6.5-inch (16cm) 2-way component speakers; the XS-160ES 6.5-inch (16cm), XS-690ES 6x9-inch (16x24 cm) and XS-680ES 6x8-inch (16x20cm) 2-way coaxial speakers; and, finally, the XS-W104ES 10-inch subwoofer.

Their diaphragms are enhanced with Sony's in-house third-gen Mica Reinforced Cellular (MRC) material, which also bears a honeycomb pattern for resistance while bending of over 10 times more than the polypropylene (PP) matrix also often used for diaphragm cores (according to Sony, at least).

Sony claims this development results in "enhanced frequency response and smooth sound characteristics" in the XS-W104ES subwoofer. It and its sibling speakers may also benefit from Separated Notch Edge Surround, a technique in which strategic curved notches are carved into the units' edges for potentially enhanced "vertical amplitude symmetry", which may in turn "dramatically" reduce distortion and raise the speakers' clarity.

The new Mobile ES speakers are also developed to adapt to the in-car environment with new 5-beam frames and Dynamic Air Diffusers for adequate air-flow and voice-coil cooling. In the case of the XS-162ES, its PP film capacitor helps create a bi-amp and gain Selector for its crossover networks for enhanced stability in its high-end output.

Then again, all of the new speakers also feature a soft-dome tweeter diaphragm that might support frequencies of up to 40 kilohertz (kHz). The 2021 Mobile ES speakers start at US$249.99 each for the XS-680ES and XS-160ES, or $299.99 each for the XS-162ES and XS-690ES, whereas the XS-W104ES subwoofer costs $219.99.

They are available to pre-order at Sony's authorized partners (availability dependent on location) from May 2021, although they may not ship until June 2021.
