With Samsung indicating that a new Galaxy Note model is unlikely this year, in part at least due the global chip shortage, S-Pen lovers had been fretting somewhat. The S21 Ultra support for the S-Pen has helped ease concerns, along with reports indicating that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is also likely to launch with S-Pen support. A new trademark filing by Samsung suggests that S-Pen support is also coming to the Galaxy Z Flip 3.
When Samsung originally filed for the Galaxy Z Fip trademark in early 2020, there was no mention of any support for an S-Pen or S-Pen like device. As we know, that device didn’t ship with support for an S-Pen because the original folding display did not include any glass coating, but it has been developing its Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) solution since then. Samsung’s most recent trademark application under the “Z Flip” branding now references an “electronic pen” and “capacitive stylus”.
While the Galaxy Note approach included an integrated S-Pen slot, it is likely that neither the Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Galaxy Z Flip 3 will include such a slot. This will leave scope for the Galaxy Note to return in 2022 with any luck. However, in the meantime, it leaves room for Samsung to keep everyone’s focus squarely on its latest foldables when they launch in the coming months. S-Pen support looks like it will be one the new headlining features for both this year’s models.
