Sony HT-AX7 launches as a new form of speaker to bring "Cinematic Sound Everywhere"

You may have heard of the Sony candle-lantern speaker; now, meet its giant Lego storage brick counterpart. Then again, the design is not completely intentional in the HT-AX7 this time, as the 2 'studs' are actually also speakers in themselves, to give a grand total of 4 in addition to the dual X-Balanced front drivers flanked by passive radiators in the base unit.

The 2 pill-shaped speakers (finished in an eco-friendly "Original Blended" fabric-like material) can also be separated from the 'brick' to create what Sony depicts as something most like a home mesh network. However, rather than wireless data signals, "immersive" sound emerges, rated to create the illusion that there are "multiple phantom speakers at the front, rear, and overhead" for the person inside the resulting triangle of wireless audio.

Such multi-speaker kits are often associated with finicky placement to get all of the audio sources firing in exactly the right directions. However, Sony asserts that its new Portable Theater System does that automatically via the modules' Bluetooth 5.2 connection, not to mention their built-in 360 Spatial Sound Mapping features.

Sony also touts the whole system as the ideal 'room-to-room' (or, possibly, house to hotel) audio system, as its stackable form-factor is light and compact enough to be carried in 1 hand and can recharge via USB. Plus, the 2 detachable modules can charge wirelessly via their docks on top of the main 'hub' unit.
