Sony asserts that its new mocopi system condenses all the motion-capture hardware aspiring virtual reality (VR) content creators might need into 6 simple, wearable sensors. They even have their own app (for iOS or Android), so that the user can simply save the resulting full-body avatars to their mobile devices. mocopi is also compatible with developer resources such as Unreal Engine or Unity.

Sony has developed the mocopi system as the VR equivalent of ZV-series cameras for vloggers. Accordingly, those who want to convert themselves into full-scale avatars can now do so without the need for gear such as a studio's worth of high-speed cameras or even an embarrassing green, white sphere-ridden skin-suit.

Instead, Sony's much more up-to-date system consists of just 6 sensor modules, with straps, clips or Velcro for strategic head, wrist, hip and ankle placements. Each one is IPX5/IPX8/IP6X-rated for water or dust resistance and is rated to last up to 10 hours on its battery, which recharges via USB type-C.

Sony asserts that each one's Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity is powerful and precise enough to send data in the BVH format at up to 50fps, accurate enough to construct FHD 3D video footage in MPEG-4 AVC or H.264 at up to 30fps.

Those files can be used to create content such as full-body avatar clips directly on the mocopi mobile app for Sony Xperia smartphones or newer iPhones. Alternatively, the user can import their motion-capture data directly to Unreal Engine, MotionBuilder or Unity with the mocopi SDK.

The new set of VR content-friendly sensors is available to pre-order exclusively through sony.com for US$449.
