Sony PlayStation Project Q tipped to cost less than Nintendo Switch OLED
It appears that Microsoft has ideas about launch pricing for Project Q, an aspect of the gaming handheld that Sony has not announced yet. Debuting in May alongside a pair of PlayStation-branded earbuds, the Project Q is primarily designed to stream games from a PlayStation 5 through the Remote Play service. Sony has also confirmed that Project Q will integrate all the features of a regular DualSense controller, explaining the design similarities between the pair.
In any case, documents prepared for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) as part of its Activision Blizzard acquisition hearing confirm that Microsoft believes Sony will pitch Project Q for below US$300. Referred to as a 'handheld version of the PlayStation 5', the pricing would see Project Q undercut the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) by at least US$50. Incidentally, Logitech continues to see its G Cloud gaming handheld for US$299.99, currently the most comparable device to Project Q.
Unfortunately, Microsoft has not clarified whether it has based this figure on insider information or merely internal estimates. Sony hopes to launch Project Q before the end of the year, with Tom Henderson estimating a 'mid-late November 2023' release. The company has left plenty of details unconfirmed for now, including the device's retail name. Likewise, it is unclear if Project Q will support PlayStation Plus, previously known as PlayStation Now.
