Unconfirmed PS5 Slim: New PlayStation 5 console rumored for upcoming reveal
Reliable source Tom Henderson has already offered quite a bit of information about a new PlayStation 5 SKU that is headed to the shelves later this year, which he has described as a “PS5 Gen 2” rather than a device with a more notable name, such as “PlayStation 5 Slim” or “PlayStation 5 Pro”. While the updated console is expected to be a little more streamline than the OG PS5, with the option of a (purchasable?) detachable disk drive for those who want to use it, Henderson believes it’s more likely going to be “an improved model” of the current PS5 rather than a major overhaul.
Production of this latest variant of the PlayStation 5 is believed to have been ongoing for months now, with a release date landing in September 2023. There has even been a price tag mooted for the potential PS5 Slim, with US$399 mentioned in connection with the upcoming revision. But Sony has remained tightlipped about its existence and nothing has been said about an announcement or launch event – until now. Coming from the Twitter account @Shpeshal_Nick, an XboxEra podcast co-host, is the rumor that there could be a PlayStation show in August, which would be an ideal time for a PS5 Slim reveal.
This latest rumor seems to have been given some credibility by a potential leak from another well-known tipster in the gaming arena, The Snitch, who is widely believed to be someone with inside knowledge at YouTube. They recently tweeted a typically cryptic comment that read “P x S” and while some have guessed that to mean PlayStation has acquired Square Enix or something Pokémon related, there are others that reckon it indicates the PlayStation 5 Slim is coming. With plenty of rumors flying around that a PS5 Pro is being prepped for 2024, even if Sony announces and releases this latest update as just a “new and improved” PS5, there is still a lot for fans to look forward to.
I had heard a little while back that there would most likely be an August show for PlayStation and the plan was to reveal the Slim there. Maybe they're going earlier to combat the Xbox/ABK news? https://t.co/8sqyO8gnyx
