Sony has announced new features available to PS5 owners eligible to install the company’s latest beta software for the gaming console. The new software brings a host of new features the company is testing for its console that will eventually roll out globally later this year, assuming all goes well. Chief among the updates is the ability to add compatible SSDs up to 8TB in capacity, up from the previous limit of 4TB. As in the past, SSDs must meet Sony’s minimum requirements which include supporting a sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s.
Another highlight in the beta software release is the addition of support for Sony’s Tempest 3D audio technology to compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices including soundbars, TVs or home theater systems. This will enable greater immersion in games without the need to wear special headphones to enjoy games that feature Sony’s PS5 surround sound gaming experience.
In addition to new support features and social enhancements, Sony has also introduced a new accessibility feature that allows users to assign a second controller to the one account as an assist controller. This allows users to use two controllers as though they are operating the PS5 console using a single controller. This could allow, for example, a parent to help a child play a game or help a friend who could need a hand.
The new Sony PS5 system beta software is available to download now to users in the U.S., Canada, Japan, U.K., Germany, and France.
