The commenter @Zuby_Tech has been on a roll lately by offering up a thorough look at the upcoming PlayStation 5 Project Q handheld and sharing some information about a new PS5 model. Considering the self-proclaimed tech enthusiast’s knowledge of the PlayStation ecosystem, it seems worth looking at a speculated PlayStation 5 Pro specs list they shared a little while back. With the first believable leaks about the PS5 Pro (“Trinity”) now appearing, it is interesting to compare what could be with what is hoped for.
Obviously, a pinch of salt is required for every entry - as pointed out by the tipster Kepler, it appears many leakers are getting the PS5 Pro specs incorrect because of a lack of knowledge of AMD GPU architecture. For instance, it has been presumed that the mention of 30 WGPs (workgroup processors) for the PS5 Pro indicates its AMD APU will have a GPU component with 60 CUs (compute units). It has been speculated that the console will use a combination of Zen 4 and RDNA 3 knowhow, with a TFLOPs rate of 23+ (which was rounded down from a previous optimistic guess of 30+).
RDNA 3 can compute at up to 61.42 TFLOPs (FP32) for Navi 31 (Radeon RX 7900 XTX), but this is for an expensive high-end graphics card. Sony will have to aim lower for a PS5 Pro to keep costs down, but even the affordable Radeon RX 7600 with Navi 33 GPU can hit up to 21.75 TFLOPs. If the PS5 Pro delivers 23+ TFLOPs graphics compute then it is more than doubling the 10.28 TFLOPs of the current PS5 model’s GPU. Undoubtedly, the PlayStation 5 Pro’s SoC, which is apparently codenamed “Viola”, will be based on a superior manufacturing node (likely 5 nm; 4 nm also suggested).
As for the PS5 Pro price, @Zuby_Tech has previously predicted US$599 and £549 for the North American and UK markets, respectively, which would be quite impressive considering all the buffs that are mentioned (see image below) and the state of the current economic climate in general. However, a more recent tweet suggests that a minimum price of US$499 could even be on the cards. This would match the PS5's release price of US$499 and emulate what happened with the PS4, which was launched at US$399 in 2013 with the PS4 Pro coming in with the same price tag in 2016.
