Tom Henderson has shared new information about the PlayStation 5 Pro, having recently discussed the possibility of Sony releasing a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year. According to Henderson, Sony has been developing what will become a Pro-branded model 'since early 2022' under the codename 'Trinity'. For reference, it appears that Trinity is another The Matrix-inspired codename after 'Neo' and 'Morpheus' for the PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation VR, respectively.
Additionally, Henderson insists that Sony has not cancelled any PlayStation 5 Pro-related projects. Instead, Trinity has been the sole PlayStation 5 Pro development device since its inception. Moreover, Sony is expected to market the PlayStation 5 Pro as delivering a more consistent 4K experience and a new 8K performance mode. The games console is also rumoured to offer accelerated ray tracing, although likely not at 8K. Purportedly, the PlayStation 5 Pro will be capable of providing these performance improvements through GPU and RAM changes, with the latter boosted by 28.5% from 14,000 MT/s to 18,000 MT/s.
Meanwhile, the GPU is thought to feature 30 Work Group Processors (WGP), of which the existing PS5 has 18, or 36 Compute Units (CUs). As the likes of Wccftech note, this would suggest that the PlayStation 5 Pro has a GPU with 60 CUs, mirroring the Radeon RX 6800. Reportedly, Sony is targeting a November 2024 release for the PlayStation 5 Pro, four years after the release month of the current PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. Henderson adds that while Sony is already hosting PlayStation 5 Pro demo events, development kits will not reach 'the majority of studios' before late November 2023.
