Blizzard has announced that Overwatch 2 will be playable via Steam on August 10, the same day as Overwatch 2: Invasion's launch. A Battle.net account will still be required to play the game.

Mike Ybarra, President of Blizzard Entertainment, has announced that Overwatch 2 is coming to Steam. The game was previously exclusively to Battle.net. While players will now be able to launch the free-to-play title via Steam, a Battle.net account will still be required to carry forward progress and in-game items across both platforms.

Overwatch 2 hits Steam on August 10, the same date as Overwatch 2: Invasion lands on all platforms. Blizzard calls it "the largest seasonal update yet". The company also states more Blizzard games will be available via Steam, but there's no word about which titles will be playable and when. Older titles such as Diablo II: Resurrected would be an excellent start, as it will steer more players towards Diablo IV (and away from Path of Exile).

Overwatch 2 being playable via Steam is no coincidence. Activision Blizzard's recent earnings report (via IGN) states that the player count and engagement have dropped significantly. This is likely a last-ditch effort to get more gamers onboard Overwatch 2. Whether or not Blizzard's ploy will work remains to be seen. It has consistently failed to meet expectations, and a Steam release might not be enough to offset the damage.
