The PlayStation 5 Pro could pack a custom APU with a Zen 4 CPU and an RDNA 3/3.5 iGPU. According to the newest leak out of RedGamingTech, the PS5 Pro reportedly features 16 GB of GDDR6 RAM alongside an unspecified amount of DDR5 memory for the OS. The leaker also mentions considerably higher clock frequencies for both the CPU and the iGPU.

Based on the number and frequency of leaks alone, it is reasonable to assume that Sony could be preparing new PlayStation 5 consoles. For instance, a video of a purported PS5 Slim surfaced recently showing a design that incorporates noteworthy changes compared to the current PS5 console. We have also heard a slew of reports regarding the PlayStation 5 Pro, the mid-gen upgrade that is rumored to pack significantly more horsepower than the vanilla PS5.

Now, thanks to Paul of RedGamingTech (RGT), we have the “latest” specifications of the PS5 Pro which differ in some aspects from previous rumors.

First up, Paul claims that the PS5 Pro’s custom APU could be manufactured on TSMC 5/4 nm process and feature a CPU with 8 Zen 4 cores and an iGPU with 30 Workgroup Processors (WGP). The 60 Compute Units (CU) iGPU could either be based on RDNA 3 or RDNA 3.5.

Furthermore, both the CPU and the GPU are expected to be clocked much higher than the base PS5, as the leaker mentions frequencies of “well over 3.6 GHz” for the CPU and 2.7 GHz for the GPU. As a reference, the base PS5 has a variable CPU boost frequency of 3.5 GHz and a variable GPU frequency of 2.23 GHz.

Interestingly, the Paul performs some preliminary calculations based on these rumored specs and shows that PS5 Pro could have a total compute of up to 23.04+ TFLOPS if it has a 30 WGP iGPU operating at 3 GHz. However, this is pure speculation on RGT’s part, so take it as such.

On the memory side, the leaker suggests a combination of 16 GB of GDDR6 and an unknown amount of DDR5 for the OS. He also alleges SSD enhancements but gives no details as to what those enhancements might be. However, it is reasonable to assume that Sony could increase the size of the drive while keeping the speed unchanged since the base PS5’s SSD is already plenty fast at 5.5 GB/s.

Interestingly, Paul reports that the PS5 Pro APU could feature 96 ROPs (Render Output Units), a 50% increase over the base PS5. If true, this could enhance the Pixel Fillrate quite a bit over the current-gen consoles. According to the leaker’s calculations, assuming the GPU clock remains the same as the vanilla PS5, the PS5 Pro could have a Pixel Fillrate of 214 Gpixels or roughly 50% more.

Long story short, the PS5 Pro is gearing up to be a giant performance leap over the current PS5. However, Sony is yet to confirm or deny the existence of the PS5 Pro, so take the information presented here as non-final and highly likely to change.
