A huge gaming-related leak courtesy of Im A Hero Too, which also involved plenty of tasty Nintendo Switch 2 tidbits, has included a brief but interesting detail about the future of the PlayStation 5 family. There has already been plenty of news about the so-called PS5 Slim, which at the moment is basically looking like it’s more of a new variant of the current PS5 that also happens to be slightly slimmer, and now there is another detail to learn about the supposed PS5 Pro. The leaker makes this comment in a Reddit post:
Square has new PS5 devkits, we're assuming these are the 'Pro'.
It’s a reasonably safe bet that any new PS5 dev kit would be for a Pro model, as it seems unlikely Sony would feel the need to produce and send out dev kits for minor revisions of an already existing unit. This suggests that developers are dealing with a completely new piece of equipment that falls into this particular console generation, in other words, the PS5 Pro. In addition, the source mentions it’s Square that has one of these alleged PS5 Pro dev kits, which would come as no surprise considering how important the Final Fantasy series is to PlayStation.
However, it’s not just Final Fantasy that has been linked to the PS5 Pro, as it has already been reported that there might be a potential PS5 Pro bundle in the works, with no less than GTA 6 being the associated title. The PS5 Pro release date is expected to fall in the latter half of 2024, which would be around the same time as many expect GTA 6 to land.
The PlayStation 5 Pro is already being touted by some outlets as the “world’s most powerful console” (not an official claim as Sony has been tightlipped about any such console). It is hoped that the PS5 Pro will consistently produce 4K 60 fps gaming and enjoy improved ray-tracing capabilities and support 8K output while costing less than US$500.
