Sony has announced a major update for the PlayStation 5 (PS5), shortly before the company starts shipping the PlayStation Portal. In a blog post, the company explains that the new update will be distributed globally. As a result, it could take a few days before your console becomes eligible to download it.
Either way, Sony states that it has enabled surround sound output to Dolby Atmos systems over HDMI, a feature that has somehow been missing since the console's launch. Thus, it should now be possible for speakers and soundbars to benefit from Sony's proprietary Tempest 3D Audio software. Additionally, this month's update doubles the supported capacity of M.2 SSDs to 8 TB and adds the option of disabling the beep sound when a PS5 is switched off.
Separately, Sony has added the option of using two controllers to control the same on-screen character in what it describes as 'assistance mode'. As such, it is now possible to help someone without taking charge of their controller. Moreover, this month's update introduces game library search functionality, another feature that the PS5 has somehow been missing until now.
Meanwhile, Sony has released a PS Remote Play app for Smart TVs running at least Android TV 12. Initially, only the Bravia A95L QD-OLED and Google Chromecast 4K will be eligible to use the software, which allows you to wirelessly stream a PS4 or PS5 connected even on different Wi-Fi networks. Unfortunately, the new PS Remote Play app does not support game streaming through PlayStation Plus Premium, meaning that you will need a PS5 console to stream PS5 games to a Bravia A95L QD-OLED or Google Chromecast 4K.
