The GeForce RTX 4070 may soon be getting a price cut according to the latest leak from Moore’s Law Is Dead. MLID alleges that NVIDIA will counter the Radeon RX 7800 XT by offering discounts on the RTX 4070. In fact, the company has reportedly already started doing so, as the GIGABYTE Windforce RTX 4070 can now be had for less than the launch MSRP.

AMD has put a lot of pressure on NVIDIA’s mid-range offerings, namely the RTX 4060 Ti and the RTX 4070, with the launch of the RX 7700 XT and the RX 7800 XT. The RX 7800 XT in particular has proven to be quite a hit with fans as reports have painted the card as a best-seller.

The strong sales of the RX 7800 XT are not a surprise since not only does the board edge out the RTX 4070 in rasterization but it is also US$100 cheaper. For instance, per Hardware Unboxed’s 45 game benchmark, the RX 7800 XT is, on average, 5% ahead at 1080p, 7% faster at 1440p, and 8% more performant at 4K vs the RTX 4070 in rasterization workloads.

To counter the RX 7800 XT’s pricing advantage, NVIDIA may finally be implementing an RTX 4070 price cut if the latest report from Moore’s Law Is Dead is accurate. Per the leaker, the first sign of the upcoming RTX 4070 price drop is the GIGABYTE RTX 4070 which is currently going for US$549.99 or US$50 less than the MSRP. A quick look around Newegg and Amazon confirms that GIGABYTE is indeed selling the Windforce GeForce RTX 4070 for US$549.99.

Calling it a “response to the success of the RX 7800 XT”, MLID’s source suggests that we will see more such discounts. Considering that MLID’s previous leak about the incoming RTX 4060 Ti price cut did come true, as we can now find the RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB for as low as US$449.99, it won’t be surprising to see NVIDIA offer similar discounts on the RTX 4070 by way of AIBs.

Let’s hope Team Green does drop the RTX 4070 price to make the card easier to recommend, as it isn’t exactly a performance/price champ at full retail.
