Seagate launches a 4TB Xbox storage expansion card, but the NVMe SSD has a surprisingly high price

Xbox console sales may be struggling, but storage remains a concern for Series X and Series S owners. A new listing for a 4TB Seagate NVMe SSD has surfaced at Best Buy. While buyers can archive games on external USB drives, current-gen titles only boot on Xbox storage expansion cards. However, that convenience comes at a high cost compared to alternatives. Even at the discounted sale price of $429.99, the latest Seagate solution is causing sticker shock.

Supported Xbox storage card options only include NVMe SSD drives from Seagate and Western Digital. The accessories slide into the expansion slot on Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. Once installed, games load nearly as quickly as they do when stored on the system's internal storage. Until now, the largest-capacity SSD approved by Microsoft was 2TB.

With Game Pass a huge draw on Xbox consoles, AAA titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 can eat away at available space. Microsoft has also embraced digital gaming at the expense of physical media. To accommodate gamers, the manufacturer released the 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition Series X in 2024. Of course, that still won't satisfy the most dedicated players.

Buyers considering Microsoft's gaming systems are already paying a premium. In response to tariffs, the company raised the price of its consoles and accessories in early May. The $499.99 MSRP of the 4TB Seagate Xbox storage expansion card only adds to the burden.

The price of the new Seagate SSD is especially frustrating when comparable drives for the PS5 cost significantly less. Microsoft elected to use proprietary technology for its storage rather than traditional NVMe M.2 SSD drives. The installation process is easier, but it leads to higher prices for consumers.
