On June 8th, Microsoft featured new Xbox games like The Outer Worlds 2 and Ninja Gaiden 4 during its showcase. Gamers hoping to collect disc versions of the titles are now feeling disappointed. Wario64 on social media noted that some retailers aren't carrying the games in physical form. For now, PS5 users can still pre-order discs in retail cases. With Microsoft bringing its Play Anywhere campaign to a new Xbox console, gaming is rapidly becoming exclusively digital.
When Gears of War: Reloaded surfaced in May, there were already indications of limited options for Xbox owners. A Spanish retailer claimed that only PS5 and PC gamers could purchase discs. Now, U.S. stores are following suit by not selling physical releases of the game. The same situation applies to many Xbox Play Anywhere and Game Pass titles included in Microsoft's June 8th event.
Xbox Play Anywhere games work on Xbox consoles, PCs, and other supported devices. Players can carry over their progress and achievements on different platforms. However, digital licenses are required, which excludes physical media. The feature is critical to the portable new Xbox console options announced by Microsoft. Running on the Windows OS, ROG Xbox Ally users can seamlessly move between desktops, laptops, and the handheld PC.
With Xbox Series X console sales struggling, Microsoft is shifting its focus to PCs and mobile gaming. Many PCs lack optical drives and have already transitioned to the digital age. It's also unlikely that any Windows-powered handheld will support Switch 2-style cartridges. On the other hand, Microsoft reportedly has other consoles in development. Even so, it wouldn't be a shock if a Series X sequel only booted digital Xbox games.
PlayStation and Nintendo gamers may not escape industry trends for long. Some PS5 discs, like Doom: The Dark Ages, contain minimal data and demand large downloads for installation. Meanwhile, Nintendo is encouraging publishers and gamers to opt for eShop listings or Game-key Cards.
