While there have been a plethora of rumors/leaks regarding new PS5 consoles such as the PS5 Pro and the PS5 Slim, there haven’t been any mentionable reports about new Xbox Series consoles. According to Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, the company doesn’t plan to release any mid-gen console upgrade like the Xbox One X as this is not reflected in the consumer feedback.
Still, new Xbox Series consoles could still come out as leaker Shpeshal_Nick has alleged on the XboxEra podcast that Microsoft might be preparing an Xbox Series X digital-only console without a disc drive. When Microsoft launched the Xbox Series S and X back in 2020, the company took a different route from Sony by releasing a cheaper/less powerful disc-less Series S and a more powerful/expensive Series X with a disc drive. Sony, on the other hand, launched the same PS5 in two variants: with and without a Blu-ray drive.
Furthermore, the leaker has also reported that there appear to be plans for “other hardware” in 2025. Unfortunately, Nick hasn’t specified what this hardware could be.
So if Shpeshal_Nick’s rumors are true, we might end up getting a digital-only Xbox Series X that should, in theory, cost less and have a smaller footprint than the regular Xbox Series X. But, as is the case with rumors, take these details with a grain of salt.
