According to a recent report by TrendForce, consumers can expect significant price hikes in SSD and HDD product segments, thanks to a surge in demand for storage solutions due to the ongoing AI hype as well as alignment with broader user upgrade cycles, further magnified by supply chain bottlenecks.

In a recent report from TrendForce, the publication states that major storage manufacturers WD and Seagate have instructed their retail partners to raise prices on hard drives and SSDs in the upcoming quarters.

Several factors contribute to this decision, especially the fact that market players have been hard at work to recuperate losses from previous financial quarters, exacerbated by the ongoing effects of the pandemic which led to reduced manufacturing capacity. Moreover, the ever-growing demand for high-capacity storage solutions primarily driven by the AI hype, as well as alignment with user upgrade cycles further necessitate the need for price adjustments.

Compounded by the current inadequacy of HDD supply as well as limitations in the supply chain for the overall electronics industry including flash-based storage devices, the situation prompts the impending price hike for both HDDs and SSDs. Forecasts acquired by TrendForce suggest a 5-10% price surge over the coming quarters, with the possibility for price increases throughout the year to manage the recently heightened demand.

Clearly, those planning to upgrade their storage systems should preferably be quick with their plans to prevent falling prey to the upcoming price hikes. And given the current reports, it seems the price surges are here to stay for the foreseeable future.
