Some interesting PS5 Pro price speculation has resulted in the potential for Sony to perhaps only introduce a 10-20% price hike over the current PS5 Slim prices for a console that could be capable of offering more than a 30% performance increase. There are expectations that the PlayStation 5 Pro release date could land in September 2024.

A thought-provoking video from Moore’s Law Is Dead has focused on the potential pricing for the Sony PS5 Pro based on a recent alleged specs leak. According to the supposed PS5 Pro specs, the console will still feature a custom Zen 2 processor, which is the same architecture that was used for the original PlayStation 5. Video host Tom offered the opinion that Sony has stuck with this Zen generation because it will simplify backwards compatibility, and it would keep costs down for the company while it pumps more funds into the development of the PS6.

However, the PS5 Pro chip would still be an improvement over the PS5 Slim’s processor despite remaining at Zen 2. Higher clocks and a die shrink (from 6nm to purportedly 4nm), along with the presence of an enhanced neural processing unit, should give the PS5 Pro the performance advantage it will require to tempt PS5 owners and gamers in general into making a purchase. With costs in other areas, such as RAM, cooling, motherboard, etc., expected to remain similar or even cheaper than current costs, Sony may only have to factor in the additional funds required for the better processor.

Tom reckons on around $30-40 extra for materials, leaving him to predict a price tag of $500 for the PS5 Pro without disc drive, while also stating that the PS5 Pro price could settle “easily at $600 or less”. The current digital PS5 Slim retails at $449.99, so $500 for a digital PS5 Pro is a hike of just over 11%. If the PS5 Pro with disc drive ended up being $600, that would be a 20% price rise over the S499.99 required for the PS5 Slim with disc drive (available on Amazon with numerous bundle options).

The above prices actually represent a good deal for the PlayStation 5 Pro, as the channel host proposes that if the recent specs leak is accurate, then the beefed-up model could boast of a “30% minimum uplift”. In fact, his 30% figure could even be quite conservative, because if the PS5 Pro can run a game at 60 fps that was previously limited to 40 fps on the PS5, as suggested in the clip, then that would be a 50% improvement. Devs would find upgrading games for the Pro model not too challenging, with frame rates of 60 fps and 120 fps becoming the norm.
