Microsoft has had some things to say about the so-called Nintendo Switch 2 in recent Federal Trade Commission vs. Microsoft and Activision Blizzard court filings. There have been at least two intriguing references made to the next-generation Nintendo console, which appear to offer some credibility to the latest Switch 2 rumors.

Once again, court filings that document the case between Microsoft and a nation’s regulatory body have yielded some interesting tidbits about a competitor’s potential hardware plans. The latest filings offer a couple of Nintendo Switch 2 morsels, but in the past similar revelations have been made about Sony’s PlayStation Project Q device (FTC vs. Microsoft), a PlayStation 5 Slim console (FTC vs. Microsoft), and even the PlayStation 6 (CMA vs. Microsoft). There was even a recent reference to the Switch 2 (“NG Switch”) made, and now we have some comments about its status and release schedule. First up is the more obvious statement, which reads:

Of course, companies like Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft start work on their next console as soon as the current model has been launched. For instance, it was widely reported that Sony began development on the PS5 “almost a day after” the launch of the PS4. So, with the Nintendo Switch having been released in 2017, it is clear to see that the company has already had plenty of time to develop the Switch 2, which explains the plethora of Switch Pro leaks and rumors not so long ago. The more interesting information about the NG Switch is made apparently in connection with comments made by Phil Spencer, the chief of Microsoft’s Xbox division:

This is not exactly a confirmation of the Nintendo Switch 2 release date, but it’s easy to believe companies as big and sector-interrelated as Microsoft and Nintendo (and Sony) would have to share certain sensitive details with each other, even if it is just the bare minimum. Microsoft obviously expects to see a Switch successor in 2024, which is something that has been repeated on numerous occasions already. In addition, developers at Activision Blizzard who produce content for Nintendo’s Switch may have had their hands on a Switch 2 dev kit by now, leaving even fewer secrets for Microsoft to ascertain.
