Reports from last month claimed Samsung was set to equip the Galaxy Z Fold5 with a waterdrop hinge in a bid to significantly reduce the visible crease of the next-gen foldable phone. According to a new leak, those rumors were right on the mark, with the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 seemingly "confirmed" to land with the new hinge design.
This info comes from leaker Ice Universe, who's usually accurate with Samsung-related leaks. Supposedly, both the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 will finally adopt the waterdrop hinge used on rival foldables from OPPO and Xiaomi. For all of Samsung's excellent hardware and accompanying software, previous foldables have always appeared to have a disadvantage in the hinge department, with foldables like the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 and OPPO Find N2 series all having less visible creases—and closing flatter—due to their waterdrop hinge design.
Earlier reports claimed the switch to a waterdrop hinge design would have come with compromises to water resistance but it appears those fears may have been misguided, with Ice Universe now claiming both the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5 will maintain the IPX8 ratings of their predecessors. Seeing as ingress protection ratings continue to be unicorns in the foldable segment of the market—the Moto Razr 2022 does have an IP52 rating, however—this all but ensures one more generation of Samsung offering the more durable foldables on the market.
