Leaker @UniverseIce claims to have received information about which primary camera sensor the Galaxy Z Fold5 will feature when it arrives later this year. Apparently, it could be more of the same for the Galaxy Z Fold series, with Samsung unable to utilise the ISOCELL HP2 from the Galaxy S23 Ultra in its next-generation foldable smartphone.

@UniverseIce has commented on the state of the camera hardware that should be expected within the Galaxy Z Fold5, Samsung's next large foldable smartphone. For reference, Samsung brought a new 200 MP sensor to market last month in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, with third-party smartphones like the Xiaomi 12T Pro settling for the lesser ISOCELL HP1. Apparently, it would be impossible for Samsung to use the ISOCELL HP2 from the Galaxy S23 Ultra in the Galaxy Z Fold5, possibly because the device would be too thin its unfolded state.

According to the leaker, Samsung will retain the primary camera it used in the Galaxy Z Fold4, which is the same one offered in the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus, as well as the newer Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus. Specifically, the Galaxy Z Fold4 uses the ISOCELL GN3, a 50 MP sensor that has a 1/1.57-inch optical format, a 1.0 μm pixel size and Samsung's older ISOCELL 2.0 pixel type. This is not necessarily a bad thing though, as it should mean that the Galaxy Z Fold5 matches the primary camera performance of the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus.

Unfortunately, there is no word yet about whether Samsung plans to refine Galaxy Z Fold camera performance in other areas, such as with a new ultra-wide-angle sensor. The telephoto sensor in the Galaxy Z Fold4 has a slightly wider equivalent focal length than the equivalents in the Galaxy S22 Plus and Galaxy S23 Plus, which could be another source of improvement for the Galaxy Z Fold5. Currently, Samsung is expected to focus on other areas for this year's Galaxy Z Fold, such as a lighter body and a waterdrop hinge that eliminates the gap when closed that exists across the Galaxy Z range.
