Test verdict on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4: Samsung should offer a foldable smartphone with another form factor

A new display format for the Galaxy Fold series would be good
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 impresses in our test with a robust and proven design. However, not much has changed compared to the Fold3. A new XXL foldable smartphone with a more user-friendly display format would have complemented the foldable Samsung lineup in a useful way.

In our test of the Galaxy Z Fold4, the newest model of the Galaxy Z Fold series presents itself as a powerful foldable smartphone with some minor improvements compared to the Fold3. With this, Samsung remains behind expectations with its foldable series, since the changes compared to the predecessor are very limited.

The usability of the foldable Samsung smartphone depends on the value the individual user sees in the unusual format ratio of the main display in everyday operation. Every potential buyer of a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 should be aware before purchasing the very expensive foldable smartphone (MSRP 1,799 Euros, ~$1765) that the large 7.6-inch main display is less optimized for social media apps with its unusual format ratio of 21.6:18. Some mobile pages can also appear strangely sized in the browser. The same goes for productive work in split-screen mode, since the almost square screen area results in two very tall and stretched working areas. This means that, similar to the 6.2-inch exterior display, the displayed app contents can take some getting used to.

Perhaps for this reason, we heard some rumors already in spring of this year, that Samsung was working on a different conceptual design for its Fold series. There were also some signs of a massive change in the format of the cover display. But unfortunately, these prototypes of the Galaxy Z Fold4 haven't been mature enough for the market yet. For example, a real mini tablet version with a 16:9 panel in opened state would be very interesting. Particularly since the exterior display could then also get rid of the very tall side ratio beyond 21:9.
