Square releases Final Fantasy XIV PlayStation 5 open beta, free to download
Since its re-release in 2013, Final Fantasy XIV (the 14th mainline installment in the storied RPG series) is still going strong. With a new expansion set to release later this year, Final Fantasy XIV (FF14) continues to build its user base and attract new players. Now, a whole new console generation will see the popular MMORPG.
PlayStation 5 gamers who want to explore the realm of Eorzea can do so starting today. Square launched a free public beta of FF14 for the PlayStation 5 today in anticipation of the full release for the console.
The PS5 version of FF14 takes advantage of the more powerful hardware, allowing console gamers to quest at 4K resolutions at 60 frames per second. The port also supports the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback feature and 3D audio. Square also claims that load times will be significantly faster, which is to be expected considering the PS5’s speedy storage and penchant for lightning-fast loading.
Square hasn’t announced a date for the official PlayStation 5 release, saying only that it is on the way. An open beta is a good sign and means that the official release is indeed coming soon. The open beta is free to everyone and will be available until the official release.
Those interested in joining the more than 20 million adventurers online can download the open beta here (US) or here (UK and EU). The download comes in at just over 38 GB.
