PlayStation customers had to recently endure almost an entire day of PS Network downtime, which affected not only multiplayer games, but also quite a few single player games. Unsurprisingly, Downdetector was inundated with complaints from disappointed gamers, although there now seems to be some good news coming their way.
In order to make up for all the ruined weekends, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced that PlayStation Plus members will get an additional 5 days of service as compensation. The official statement did not include a specific reason as to why the downtime was caused, apart from stating the obvious, that it was due to an "operational issue". Regardless, gamers are continuing to demand for a better explanation.
Many users suspect a repeat of the events of 2011, when hackers brought the PlayStation Network to its knees for over 20 days, although that does not seem to be the case this time around. Occasional DDoS attacks against important online services are nothing out of the ordinary, although we do not have any confirmations as of this writing. Capcom is apparently considering reopening the Monster Hunter Wilds' beta sometime next week for 24 hours or so, which would undoubtedly be a welcome move for the fans of the game who were adversely affected by the PSN outage.
