Community outraged: Some users appear to be paying significantly less in the PS Store

According to Insider Gaming, this practice can now be illustrated with concrete examples. What is particularly concerning is that the differences do not amount to just a few percentage points, but can be very substantial in individual cases. The article cites Stellar Blade as one example: while many users are reportedly seeing a 43% discount, one Insider Gaming author was shown a 70% discount – a price difference of more than $18. Insider Gaming also reports that these striking discrepancies appear to be particularly noticeable with PlayStation first-party titles.
It remains unclear which criteria are being used to determine who gets which discount. Insider Gaming speculates that account age, recent activity, or other account characteristics could play a role. That is exactly what many players find problematic: those who pay more are apparently not told why they are receiving a worse offer than others. Sony has yet to provide an official explanation.
Reddit community reacts with outrage
In the Reddit thread discussing the report, the mood is mostly negative to outraged. One comment in particular received a great deal of support, arguing that a sale is no longer a real sale if loyal customers are the ones getting the worst deals. Directly below, Sony is mocked with the sarcastic slogan “Fuck the Players.” Other users openly question how such a practice could be legal at all.
The discussion is not entirely one-sided, however. Some users frame the whole thing more as targeted discounting, something that has long been common in other industries. Several comments in the thread also point out that Xbox has been using such targeted discounts for years. Still, those voices remain clearly in the minority overall.
The issue appears to hit a nerve with many gamers, especially because it concerns digital purchases. With physical games, customers can compare prices more easily or switch retailers, but transparency is much lower in the PlayStation Store. As long as Sony does not disclose the criteria by which these discounts are being distributed, the debate could intensify further.
