First trailer for Harry Potter series reveals surprisingly early release window, community divided

Even though set photos and large parts of the cast were already known, hardly anyone expected HBO’s Harry Potter series to arrive before 2027. On March 25, the first trailer was released unexpectedly – and it not only offers a first look at what is arguably one of the most anticipated TV productions of the moment, but also reveals the release window: Christmas 2026.
The first season adapts the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The trailer already features numerous iconic locations and characters – from the Dursleys’ house to Hogwarts’ grand staircases, the greenhouse, the Great Hall and the common rooms. Also featured are Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Draco and the Dursleys. Anyone hoping to catch a glimpse of popular supporting characters such as Neville Longbottom or Ginny Weasley in the first trailer will unfortunately come away empty-handed.
Among Harry Potter fans in the r/harrypotter Reddit thread, the trailer has been received mostly positively so far. Many are hoping above all for a much more faithful adaptation of the book and for more scenes showing everyday life – and that is exactly what the series appears to offer based on this first teaser. The trailer includes, for example, scenes of Harry at school and Hermione at home with her Hogwarts letter, neither of which appeared in the film adaptation. The atmosphere, which seems slightly darker than that of the first Harry Potter film, also appears to be going down well.
In the broader r/television thread, the reaction is far more critical. The dominant impression there so far is that the series looks too similar to the films without showing much of a creative identity of its own. The casting of certain roles, such as Paapa Essiedu as Snape or Arabella Stanton as Hermione, also remains a topic of debate.
