God of War series: Amazon reveals first look at Kratos and Atreus – fans disappointed

Fans have known since 2022 that Amazon has been developing a God of War series. In the summer of 2025, early details surfaced that left many disappointed. Instead of adapting the original trilogy, the show will be based on the 2018 game (PS4 version currently around $18 on Amazon), which centers on the father-son relationship between Kratos and Atreus. Amazon has now released the first official image of the two characters – and it has left fans more disappointed than excited.

Kratos is portrayed by Ryan Hurst, known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead. Callum Vinson, who previously appeared in Chucky, takes on the role of his son Atreus. The image released by Amazon appears to depict an early scene from God of War, showing Kratos teaching his son how to hunt. Rather than building anticipation among fans, the reveal has been met with a muted response. On Reddit in particular, the overall reaction has been largely critical.

Many users describe the image as resembling cosplay or compare it to a low-budget fantasy production. Common criticisms include that Kratos does not appear bulky enough, the shot feels artificial, and Atreus looks too modern with his styled hair. More optimistic Reddit users urge patience, noting that set photos are often unflattering and that moving footage will provide a clearer impression. The God of War series is not expected to premiere before 2027, possibly even 2028. Only then will a fair assessment be possible. In the meantime, fans can also hope for a new God of War game, which could see Kratos facing Egyptian gods. A planned multiplayer project centered on Kratos, however, has reportedly been canceled.
