Scripts of the God of War TV show are reportedly being written as several details about the show have emerged online. For instance, the first season of the show reportedly consists of ten episodes. However, the tone of the show might disappoint fans of the original God of War games.

God of War is one of the most recognizable names in gaming. Starting with the launch of the original game in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, the series has spawned a total of nine titles, with the latest, God of War: Ragnarok, releasing in 2022. So, it was only a matter of time before Sony developed a TV series based on the franchise.

While Sony originally announced in 2022 that a God of War TV show was coming, the series has yet to start filming due to a significant setback. With Robert D. Moore of the Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek fame now in charge of writing, it appears that the God of War TV series is coming along nicely. Now, some juicy details of the show have come out that have the potential to disappoint fans of the original trilogy.

For starters, the first season of the God of War TV show reportedly has ten episodes, while Amazon has booked the show for two seasons. The show adapts the 2018 game and allegedly focuses on Kratos and Atreus’ complicated relationship, as they journey to fulfill the last wish of Atreus’ mother.

Talking to IGN, showrunner Robert D. Moore expressed feeling drawn to the “father-son” story of Kratos and Atreus. Describing the tone of the show, he explained that the show will try to “emulate the tone of the game” with an “emotional heart”. Crucially, the tone of the show/story, despite being emotionally heavy, reportedly won’t forget to have fun along the way.

This is where the God of War TV show has the potential to disappoint some fans of the original games. The original God of War trilogy is a brutal and heavy revenge story that doesn’t pull its punches. The 2018 game is completely different, with a story that revolves more around the characters, their relationships, and emotions rather than unadulterated action.

IGN did try to pry some answers from Robert D. Moore regarding the role of Kratos’ backstory in the show, but the latter only remarked, “You’ll have to wait and see”.

There are also fears regarding the right casting choice and the show failing to capture the ambitious scale that God of War games are known for.

There are currently far more questions regarding the God of War TV show than answers. Scriptwriting is currently underway, but filming is only expected to start in 2026 and not sooner. So, we’ll know more details as the show moves ahead.
