Major God of War sequel from Cory Barlog said to come out later this year

Sony announced quite a lot of games at the State of Play event yesterday (February 12) and among them were two God of War titles. Developed by Santa Monica Studios (SMS) and Mega Cat Studios, God War: Sons of Sparta is the 2D platformer that was being talked about in leaks and rumors months before the reveal. The second was the original trilogy remake. But it looks like SMS has another major title cooking, and it’s the one that follows the mainline story.

According to insider shinobi602 on ResetEra, neither the remake nor the platformer are the games that Cory Barlog is leading. Barlog, as you may know, is the creative director at the studio and is responsible for the many of the God of War games, including the renewed 2018 and 2022 titles. He is said to be working on another mainline title that will follow the story set up by the 2018 God of War.

This new game has been in development for a while and has been kept under wraps quite well. Some rumors that have surfaced claim that it will be based in Egyptian mythology. How that will be linked to the Norse God of War, remains unclear. The insider claims that this game is “Not that far (barring any delays of course)” from being revealed, which will happen sometime this year. It could even be as early as the next State of Play in May or at the Summer Game Fest hosted by Geoff Keighley.

shinobi602 isn’t very sure on the reveal date but believes that the studio is targeting the second quarter of this year. As for the release date, it could be that SMS have decided to have a shorter reveal to release window, the insider adds. It makes sense as studios would want their major titles to release either well before are way after GTA 6 which is coming out in November this year.

That being said, the statements made by the insider suggest the launch will be sooner rather than later. This would make it the second new God of War game to come out this year, considering the trilogy remake is not a new title.
