Amazon’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of God of War is set to begin filming in March 2026 in Vancouver, Canada, according to Nexus Point News.
Casting for the God of War series is currently underway, and the project is ramping things up ever since its initial announcement back in December 2021. The series is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studios, with the hope of bringing an epic, Norse mythology-infused take on 2018’s Kratos.
Taking the lead as showrunner is Ronald D. Moore, known for Outlander, For All Mankind, and Battlestar Galactica. Moore has assembled a panel of talented writers, including Matthew Graham of Electric Dreams, Stephanie Shannon from Outlander, Narendra K. Shankar of The Expanse and For All Mankind, Joe Menosky from Star Trek Discovery, Marc Bernardin from The Continental, and Tania Lotia from The Witcher.
During San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Moore gave a progress report on God of War’s live-action adaptation with some good news, stating:
“We’re in the scripts phase. We’re still working on scripts. It’s going very well. We’ve got a good team.
It’s been a fascinating thing to sink my teeth into. I’ve never done an adaptation of a video game, and the deeper I got into it, the more impressed I was with the breadth and depth of the mythology that’s involved in this video game.”
The first season of God of War is scheduled to receive 10 episodes, directly adapting the events of 2018’s God of War installment, where Kratos relinquishes his status as the Olympian God of War and relegates himself to a quiet life in the Norse realm with his son, Atreus.
Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to fulfil his wife’s final wish of scattering her ashes from the highest peak of the Nine Realms, but things go south as the father and son encounter Baldur, setting in motion a chain of godly conflicts.
It is expected that Moore will creatively overhaul the project after the project had been juggled among different showrunners. He intends to create two seasons to fully explore the Norse saga. Pre-production of the show has been active since mid-2025, and the March 2026 filming schedule sets a really tight window for finalizing the cast of actors.
One can wonder who will end up playing the God of War, Kratos, and his son, Atreus, amid the relatively small casting window in play.
