Deborah Ann Woll says Santa Monica Studio had been planning God of War: Laufey since before God of War 2018, with Cory Barlog pitching her the project and its mysterious cube companion nearly a decade ago.

After staying tight-lipped for almost a decade about her role as Laufey the Just, also known as Faye, Kratos’ wife, in the upcoming God of War: Laufey, Deborah Ann Woll is excited to finally share details. She’s best known for playing Jessica Hamby in True Blood and Karen Page in the Daredevil series.

In a recent interview with CGMagazine at Game Con Canada 2026, Woll shared how long Cory Barlog and the team at Santa Monica Studio had been planning this side story. Woll joined the God of War cast for voice and motion capture as Faye in God of War Ragnarök, but the broader idea for Laufey’s story was already in motion behind the scenes. In the interview, she explained:

“I’m so freaking excited, I still pinch myself. You know, again, I’ve known about this for nearly ten years, and I haven’t been able to talk about it. He [Cory Barlog] pitched it to me in 2018, and they had known about it before then. It’s wild. Like, when Cory brought me in to talk about doing Ragnarök and show me the 2018 game, he already had a poster for the Laufey game with me and a cube. A cube that’s been there since the beginning. It’s deeply part of the lore.”

The glowing cube seen during PlayStation’s June 2026 State of Play reveal has been circulating online, and it appears to be more than a visual gimmick. The cube is called Phranque, a sentient cosmic companion voiced by Jack Quaid. He joins Faye in Everywhen, an afterlife realm for gods, as the game expands on the lore surrounding the Norse saga.

A different playstyle

The game steps away from the tankier, more grounded mechanics of God of War 2018 and Ragnarök, instead emphasizing speed, agility, and verticality in a way that recalls the original God of War games with a touch of Devil May Cry-style flair.

Woll continued, “All I can say is that every minute we put into this video game was about how we could make it fun and heartfelt. We just want this to be the most exciting adventure for the players.

“They were on our minds the whole time. This is, we now know we’re allowed to say, going to run concurrently with God of War 2018. And so all of the mysteries, the little hints and clues, the questions, and the lingering ideas that you have from the Norse saga, we’re going to answer a lot of that, or we’re going to expand upon it.”

Reliable leaker NateTheHate reports that God of War: Laufey is targeting a release window in the first half of 2027. Officially, Sony has announced the game for PlayStation 5, but the exact release date has not been confirmed.
