Prime Video has officially cast Ryan Hurst as Kratos in the upcoming live-action God of War series. Known for roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, Hurst also voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök (2022), linking him to the franchise’s mythology.

After months of speculation around casting, Prime Video has officially found their Kratos in Ryan Hurst. The actor has been chosen as the lead in the upcoming live adaptation of God of War, a popular video game franchise.

Ryan Hurst is best known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead. He also has experience with the franchise, as he previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök (2022). His performance in the game earned him a BFTA nomination.

The series will likely adapt the narrative established in the 2018 God of War and its 2022 sequel, focusing on Kratos’ evolving relationship with his son, Atreus, as the two embark on a journey to fulfill the final wish of Kratos’ late wife, Faye.

Prime Video has already ordered two seasons of the show, with production underway in Vancouver and casting for additional roles still in progress.

Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys and Fallout) is said to direct the first two episodes, while Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) will be the showrunner, writer and executive producer.

Produced by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions, the series represents the latest expansion of Sony’s PlayStation properties into television, following earlier adaptations such as The Last of Us.

Kratos has been portrayed by multiple actors across the video game series. Terrence C. Carson voiced the character from the original God of War (2005) through God of War: Ascension (2013). Christopher Judge took over the role with the 2018 reboot and continued through God of War Ragnarök, earning critical praise for his performance.

Hurst’s casting marks the first live-action portrayal of Kratos. The decision has drawn attention in part because of Hurst’s existing connection to the franchise, bridging his game work with his new television role.
