New set photos reignite debate over Sophie Turner as Lara Croft

Tomb Raider fans are eagerly awaiting the upcoming live-action series centered on the iconic adventurer Lara Croft. In January, Amazon Prime Video offered a first look at Sophie Turner in the lead role, prompting mixed reactions online. While some viewers were intrigued, others questioned whether Turner truly embodied the fearless archaeologist. A new set of photos has now surfaced, showing Turner fully suited up as Lara Croft during filming in Surrey, UK. The images were first published by the Daily Mail and later shared by fan account Infinity Tomb Raider on X.
Turner’s appearance has noticeably evolved since the initial preview, though the change likely reflects on-set weather conditions rather than a departure from authenticity. Instead of the classic tank top and shorts, she is seen wearing gray cargo pants, a brown ribbed shirt, a dark blue vest and fingerless gloves – an outfit that appears more practical for outdoor action scenes. Despite the updated look, signature elements such as the pistol holster and braided ponytail maintain the unmistakable Lara Croft identity. Based on Turner’s facial expressions, many of the photos appear to have been taken between takes rather than during active scenes.
The newly released images have sparked divided reactions among fans on Reddit. Many praise the grounded, practical look and welcome the decision to film on real outdoor sets, arguing that it adds a stronger sense of realism. Others, however, claim that Sophie Turner lacks the distinct “Lara energy” needed to fully embody the character – a criticism often linked to comparisons with earlier portrayals by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. Turner’s hair color, which differs from Lara Croft’s traditional appearance, has also drawn criticism. At the same time, some fans remain more neutral, suggesting that elements such as costume and hair are ultimately secondary. In their view, a fair assessment can only be made once the series airs. As of now, no official release date has been announced, although a premiere before 2027 appears unlikely.
