New 8BitDo Ultimate 2 rival receives global release: Anbernic launches new Bluetooth wireless controller for under $40

Anbernic has now released its alternatives to popular wireless controllers like the GameSir G7 Pro and the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless. Anbernic's second controller to date, the RG G01 departs from the existing RG P01 in several areas. For one, the RG G01 does not resemble 8BitDo Ultimate controllers like the RG P01.
Still an Xbox layout, the RG G01 closely resembles the Manba One (curr. $55.99 on Amazon) with an almost identical look, feel and overall feature set. However, Anbernic has not included a charging dock, nor does the RG G01 contain pogo pins that would allow Anbernic to release one at a later date. Thus, one must charge the 2,100 mAh built-in battery via USB Type-C.
The new controller also supports Xinput, Dinput, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS modes via Bluetooth, wired or 2.4 GHz wireless (USB Type-A). Unfortunately, Anbernic's advertised 1,000 Hz polling rate is only achievable in Xinput mode when using a wired or 2.4 GHz connection. Worse still, Retro Game Corps has found that Bluetooth polling rates vary between 125 Hz and 131 Hz, rather than Anbernic's stated 180 Hz.
Also, early reviewers have had varying success with the controller's heart rate monitor. Thankfully, all configuration options can be adjusted directly on the controller without companion software too, thanks to its built-in display. This display lacks a timeout function and eventually defaults back to the pairing screen, though.
Also, while Anbernic has included trigger stops, they mirror the Manba One's intuitive placement, where one's index fingers might rest when gaming. The Anbernic RG G01 starts at $35.99 when purchased directly, rising to $39.99 on February 10 at 10:00 UTC. By contrast, Anbernic's official AliExpress listing currently runs to $55.98 before discounts. Please see the videos above and below for more details.
