Deal | Well-rated hardcore tactics RPG becomes free game on Steam for limited time

A niche yet relatively demanding RPG title has just transitioned into a free game on Steam, Magellania. Currently holding a 100% positive player rating, it will remain a freebie until February 09, 2026, and after that, the regular retail price tag will return, which is $9.99.

Developed by Illunsoft, Magellania puts players in a reimagined version of the Solar System. Being placed in the shoes of Prince Lofty of Pluto, the story starts with being let down by the rulers of the other planets. This makes Lofty go into full-scale invasion mode, and this absurd premise is backed up with deep tactical mechanics.

Speaking of which, the gameplay revolves around squad-based, turn-based battles. This currently free game on Steam emphasizes aggressive play, making it a good pick for those who have played XCOM: Enemy Unknown (curr. $5.99 on Humble Bundle), Fire Emblem, and Wasteland.

There is a wide range of classes, allowing players to assemble teams according to their preference. The game also features a combo combat system that rewards chain attacks, and there are many action commands that can do boosted damage.

Outside of combat, players can explore different planets and collect collectibles that can change the vibe for specific scenarios. This current free game is also known for its lighthearted space-opera humor, which complements a system that expects careful planning and decision-making.

However, it's worth noting that Magellania does little to ease players in, and its steep difficulty can be frustrating to newcomers of the genre. Unlike some of the other tactical RPGs, there aren't many community resources available either, making it somewhat inaccessible to those who haven't played similar games.
