Led by GTA 6 Ultimate Edition pre-orders, PS Store buyers prefer high-priced digital games

Before GTA 6 pre-orders began, some fans speculated that Rockstar would ask a premium price. While the $100 Ultimate Edition requires a steep investment, the option is proving popular on the PlayStation Store. However, it’s only part of a larger trend of buyers paying extra for upgraded digital games.
The age of deluxe digital gaming
A TweakTown article explains how in multiple regions, the most expensive variety of GTA 6 PS5 leads pre-order sales. Meanwhile, the $80 Standard Edition performs well, but is behind the $70 Halo: Campaign Evolved and $80 Marvel’s Wolverine. Notably, the Premium and Deluxe versions of these competitors also rank higher than the $50-70 alternatives.
The GTA 5 follow-up illustrates that many gamers can’t resist the allure of additional content. For $20 more, the Ultimate Edition offers exclusive weapons, vehicles, and cosmetics. In this case, the fact that the base game isn’t a traditional physical game may be a factor. Lacking a PS5 disc, the cheaper code-in-box release isn’t as appealing.

With Marvel’s Wolverine, PS Store customers can opt for a Blu-Ray at other retailers. Yet, the Deluxe Edition is still enjoying more support. Recent statistics by Circana showed how, despite objections to the disc-less transition, consumers gravitate toward digital games. These also include the pricier versions.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Madden NFL 27 pre-orders follow the same pattern. That said, the live-service model encourages purchasing DLC before and after release dates.
Paying more in a challenging economy
In its announcement, Sony emphasized that the decision was based on user preference. Publishers also boost profits when they avoid printing and shipping costs, including on GTA 6 PS5 SKUs. Above standard-priced digital editions that bundle non-tangible bonuses are even more lucrative.
Later in the PS5 lifecycle, supporters can focus their budgets on expanding PlayStation Store libraries. Still, Sony may find that difficult after asking buyers to invest in the PS6. Analysts fear that amid the ongoing memory shortage, the console’s price could exceed $1000. Regardless, by then, the gaming giant will hope the furor from physical game defenders dies down.
