Valve has released a substantial update for the Steam client, introducing a long list of smaller improvements alongside several more significant upgrades – including some aimed specifically at the Steam Machine.

Valve began rolling out a new Steam Client update to the Stable channel on July 21. While the update contains numerous minor improvements, it also introduces several noteworthy new features. As usual, Valve has not assigned a traditional version number in the official patch notes. Among other changes, the notification settings have been reorganized in some languages to improve clarity. The Maximum Game Resolution menu has also been expanded again. Valve had previously shortened the dropdown list and hidden several resolution options, but they are now available once more under the "More Options" submenu. This keeps the list cleaner at first glance without removing any supported resolutions.

Remote Play should run more smoothly

Remote Play now supports a frame rate limit of 59.94 FPS. While this may seem like an unusual value, it originates from the NTSC standard and is commonly used by TVs and video capture devices. Better matching the stream's frame rate to the display's refresh rate can result in smoother motion and reduce visible stuttering. Valve also says that streaming should now perform more smoothly even when the frame rate limit is selected automatically. In addition, offline devices should no longer incorrectly appear as available streaming targets.

Easier to find games for the Steam Machine

For Steam Machine owners, the update introduces several particularly useful additions. Games now display their Steam Machine Verified badge directly on their store tiles and product pages. The library has also gained a new "Great on Machine" section, which highlights titles that are especially well suited for the Steam Machine.

Valve has also expanded controller support to include the PDP Afterglow Wave for Nintendo Switch and Turtle Beach controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2 (currently available on Amazon for around $8). In addition, several issues affecting the Steam Controller have been fixed, including problems with the gyroscope, duplicate trackpad inputs and occasional double registration of the B button.
