A solo modder has released Gears of War 2: Hollow, an unofficial native PC port offering the full campaign, co-op, Horde, multiplayer, DLC, uncapped frame rates, and resolutions up to 4K. Built from a leaked 2008 developer version, the community project can exceed 200 FPS but retains some lighting glitches and untested online features.

Gamers have been waiting for Microsoft to release a proper way to re‑experience Gears of War 2. The only way to previously play Gears of War on PC was to play the original version via Xbox Cloud Gaming. However, after nearly two decades, Gears of War 2 is now unofficially playable on PC as a native port without using emulators.

During the Xbox 360’s heyday, Gears of War 2 delivered one of the most over‑the‑top, action‑packed, and gruesome campaigns of its time in 2008. However, the game remained an Xbox exclusive and was never ported to PC.

A leaked developer build of Gears of War 2 from early 2008, which also included Windows binaries, was archived and publicly released on July 22, 2022. This was recently used as a foundation by solo developer and modder xHeliosx, who created a fully playable Gears of War 2 PC port with uncapped framerates and resolutions, allowing gamers to experience the game at 4K 144 FPS and higher.

The project is known as Gears of War 2: Hollow. It also adds co‑op support, Horde mode, and multiplayer on PC, along with all DLC. In his official post on X announcing Gears of War 2: Hollow, Helios stated:

Gears of War 2: Hollow is officially out! Experience the full Campaign/Co‑op/Horde/MP on PC. All base maps, all DLC maps, DLC Campaign Road to Ruin. Steam P2P connection. Progression save. This was a one‑man project, so the online/PvP were not tested. I apologize if there are issues.”

Gamers can dive right in, as the launcher is already available for download on ModDB, where Gears of War 2: Hollow is listed as a “Custom Community Build,” allowing gamers to enjoy the entirety of the 2008 Xbox exclusive on PC without relying on an emulator.

Many gamers have uploaded footage of the game running at 4K resolution and 200 FPS or higher, with improved mouse-and-keyboard support. However, some users reported lighting glitches due to the incomplete nature of the original leaked build. Even so, it’s an impressive project for a title gamers never got to experience on PC for nearly two decades.
