If you enjoy RimWorld but wish you could grab an axe and join the action yourself, First Feudal might be worth a look. Instead of managing your settlement entirely from a top-down perspective, you can take direct control of your feudal lord. The colony-building sim is currently available on Steam for its lowest price ever – just $1.19.

In First Feudal, players take on the role of a feudal lord who begins with little more than a small group of impoverished peasants. Step by step, you build a medieval settlement complete with homes, workshops, farms and defensive structures – or simply sit back on your throne and let your subjects do the hard work. Rather than relying on fantasy creatures or magic, the game embraces a grounded medieval setting centered around farming, crafting, trade and keeping your people supplied. At the same time, you'll have to defend your settlement against bandits, wolves and bears, while harsh winters and dwindling supplies constantly put your planning skills to the test. And if you can't fend off a bandit raid, you may have to make the ultimate sacrifice – one of your peasants will spend the rest of their days in slavery.

At its core, First Feudal shares similarities with genre heavyweights like RimWorld, but it sets itself apart in one key area. Instead of managing everything exclusively from an overhead perspective, players can directly control their feudal lord, allowing them to gather resources, construct buildings and fight enemies themselves. The game also features complex production chains, an extensive profession system, four seasons, farming, trade and an unusual technology tree in which new developments are unlocked through practical work rather than research points. Players can also build their settlement together with up to five other players in co-op.

On Steam, 76% of more than 630 user reviews recommend First Feudal. Players praise its unique blend of colony management and direct character control, as well as its detailed production chains and unconventional progression system. On the downside, many feel it lacks the strategic depth of games like RimWorld. The controls can also feel somewhat unintuitive, and the amount of micromanagement tends to increase significantly in the later stages of the game.

First Feudal normally costs around $19.99 on Steam. Thanks to a 94% discount, however, it is available for just $1.19 until July 27. According to SteamDB, this is the game's lowest price ever. Previous sales topped out at 90% off, most recently in early June. While Steam Deck compatibility is officially listed as Unknown, ProtonDB reports that the game runs well on the handheld.
