GTA 6 pre-orders rose 436% after Netflix trailer, with PS5 sales dominating Xbox

The financial terms of the Rockstar Games and Netflix collaboration are unclear. Regardless, the marketing deal is benefiting both companies, boosting GTA 6 pre-orders and viewership. Sensor Tower estimates that after the August 27th Extended Look, game sales skyrocketed by 436% compared to the previous day.
That momentum continued into August 28th, with pre-orders rising by 572% over the two-day period. Sensor Tower uses averages registered in the prior 30 days as its point of comparison.
The console divide
Since the market intelligence firm began tracking reservations on June 24th, PS5 copies have held a steady lead. A large divide again emerged following the 26+ minute GTA 6 Netflix trailer, which Sony’s base console recorded. On August 27th, PlayStation sales jumped 606%, while Xbox saw a more modest 127% increase.

Netflix also enjoyed a surge of interest, as downloads of the streaming service’s app ranked as high as 35th on Apple’s App Store. That was up 61 places in 24 hours, and improved on its average 76th rank over the past 30 days.
Did anyone not know about the game?
Before the Extended Look aired, Sensor Tower already showed a total of 4.55 million pre-orders. That’s noteworthy, considering Rockstar hadn’t shared gameplay since the second GTA 6 trailer in May 2025. Despite the news that visuals may be limited to 30 fps, the new PS5 footage convinced holdouts ahead of the November release date.
Rockstar drew criticism for making the video exclusive to the streaming giant for 6 hours. Still, the move let the publisher, Take-Two Interactive, and the studio target a new audience. Netflix has struggled to produce its own titles, but gamers flocked to the service nonetheless. These viewers propelled the special to the 1st position on its top 10 movies list.
Abe Yousef, Senior Insights Analyst, calculated the updated sales data. The firm relies on “proprietary panel and data science models” for its projections. Take-Two has not offered official estimates, although CEO Strauss Zelnick called GTA 6 pre-orders “exceptional.”
