Netflix has scored a worldwide streaming hit with Swapped, yet critics appear less convinced by the fantasy animated film. Reddit users are now discussing why the movie seems to resonate more strongly with audiences than with reviewers.

Swapped has become one of Netflix’s latest surprise hits. The film follows two animal-like creatures who unexpectedly swap bodies in a magical fantasy world and is presented in a family-friendly animation style. According to FlixPatrol, the fantasy animated film was briefly number one on the Netflix charts in 71 countries at the same time, including the United States. Despite that success, its Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes sits at a comparatively modest 71%. That gap between audience enthusiasm and critical response has now sparked discussion on Reddit.

Many users describe the film as “underrated” and argue that critics have judged the Netflix adventure too harshly. Much of the praise focuses on its imaginative setting, detailed worldbuilding, music and emotional family-movie tone. Some viewers even say they enjoyed Swapped more than several comparable animated films from recent years, including Inside Out 2 and the Super Mario Bros. Movie.

So why the rather mixed reviews?

The lukewarm critical response seems to have less to do with the film’s basic quality and more with its familiar formula. Many critics accuse Swapped of leaning heavily on established genre patterns. Its story, in which two creatures swap bodies and gradually learn to understand each other’s perspectives, is essentially an animal-themed take on Freaky Friday.

Comparisons with Pixar films also play a role. Some reviews describe Swapped as charming and nicely animated, but also predictable and less emotionally layered than major animated blockbusters. On Reddit, many fans argue that the same film might have received a warmer response had it come from Pixar rather than Netflix. A certain bias against Netflix productions could therefore be one reason for the more muted critical reception.
